Newtown, Connecticut: Obama’s national conversation may be impossible
At a Sunday night eulogy for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, President Obama called for a “national conversation.” Skeptics dismissed this as a meaningless, feel-good gesture lacking serious policy changes. People even disagree whether failure to enact policies is negative or positive. Sometimes status quo is the best of terrible options, and that “change” means “worse.”
Yet a much deeper problem if not fixed will doom any discussion. What has to change is the tone.
