FOX NEWS GOP Debate 3/3/16

Chris Wallace asked Trump about Romney. Trump called Romney a failed candidate. Trump was asked about David Duke, and Trump disavowed him.

Bret Baier asked Rubio about his attacks on Trump. Rubio said Trump has been belittling people for over a year. Rubio noted that the media gave Trump’s insults free media coverage.

Trump bragged about the size of his genitals.

Megan Kelly asked Cruz about his losing in the South.

Cruz immediately pivoted to the issues, saying Americans are not interested in a bunch of bickering schoolchildren. They want solutions.

Trump insisted that he is beating Rubio and Cruz badly.

Rubio counted that 2/3 of voters in these primaries do not want Trump. Trump is not a conservative.

Rubio said to Trump, “Hillary Clinton will wipe you out.”

Trump said, “I have not started on Hillary yet.”

Baier asked Kasich whether he should drop out. Kasich said he was tired about process. He does not get into the scrums. He is the adult in the race. Romney does not set his strategy. He will not need on the job training.

Baier noted that Kasich’s path was a contested convention. Kasich said “I will win Ohio” and promised to do well in Michigan and other areas in the North. He will bring people together.

Wallace asked Rubio how many jobs he created. Rubio challenged that Trump’s clothing line is made overseas. Rubio said that to create jobs, you make it easier for job creators to do so.

Trump called Rubio a little guy. When asked if he would bring his clothing line jobs back to America, Trump was non-committal. Trump called TPP a disaster and said Rubio favored it.

Rubio pointed out that Trump did not commit to bring the jobs home. He noted that Trump resorts to insults because he cannot discuss policy. Rubio noted Trump’s failures and Trump countered with his successes.

Wallace challenged Trump on what he would cut.

Trump cited Common Core, Department of Education, EPA. Larry Kudlow likes him.

Wallace showed that those cuts would be 86 billion but the deficit is 544 billion.

Trump said that we don’t have proper bidding procedures.

Wallace kept at it, noting Trump’s plan to save 300 billion from medicare drugs but the program is only 78 billion. Trump insisted 300 billion was accurate.

Wallace asked Cruz how taxes will be collected if IRS is abolished. Cruz cited the Treasury. Cruz said he understood that people were angry and that Trump tapped into that anger, but that Trump was part of the 4 decades of Washington corruption. Trump has used government power for private game.

Trump said he supported politicians. As a businessman he owed that to his company.

Wallace asked Kasich about his support for raising the minimum wage. Kasich replied that he supported the increases in Ohio but did not support it at the federal level. Kasich said he was the only one who balanced budgets. He worked with Bill Clinton and fought George W. Bush on budgets.

Megan Kelly shifted to immigration and asked about Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions endorsing Trump. Cruz noted Trump’s support for liberal politicians and liberal policies. Trump has written checks to Hillary Clinton 10 times, 4 of those to her 2008 presidential campaign.

Trump said those checks were for business. He also supported Reagan and George W. Bush.

Kelly asked Trump about a private interview detailing Trump’s flexibility on immigration. Trump attacked Buzzfeed and said off the record comments should stay off the record. Trump said you have to have flexibility, unlike Cruz who cannot get things done. We need give and take in government.

Kelly asked Rubio’s favoring a path to citizenship for illegals. Rubio challenged Trump to release the NY Times transcript on that off the record conversation. Rubio then reiterated his immigration position.

Trump cited his support from Sheriff Joe Arpaio and said he would not release the off the record tape.

When Kelly asked Trump about his shifting position on Visas for highly skilled workers, Trump admitted that he changed and softened his position. We need top talent.

Cruz said he would propose a 180 day moratorium on immigration. We need to audit the process. Cruz noted that Trump does not hire Americans. Trump’s hard line on immigration is just rhetoric. Trump can exonerate himself by releasing the tape.

Trump cited his difficulty in hiring short term jobs during the snowbird season in Florida. Most Americans don’t want those jobs.

Rubio pounced. Florida is Rubio’s turf. He noted that Trump hires foreigners because it saves money.

Trump says he only does that with short term workers.

Cruz again called on Trump to release the tapes.

Baier shifted the conversation to terrorism.

Rubio was asked if we should have more ground troops in Libya as he wants to do in Iraq and Syria. Rubio cited that you have to take away the operating space. They have to be driven out. It will require Special ops in combination with airstrikes.

Kasich cited his 18 years on the defense committee. He attacked Hillary Clinton for toppling Khadafi. He said special forces would not work. We need significant ground troops.

Baier asked Trump about 100 people condemning him for his support for torture. What would he do if military refused a presidential order?

Trump said they would not refuse. He would even go stronger, tougher than waterboarding. Trump said that targeting the families of terrorists was acceptable.

Cruz noted that yelling and cursing at people does not make you a tough guy. He vowed to rebuild the military.

Baier pointed out that Cruz had positive words about Edward Snowden in 2013, and only recently called him a traitor. Cruz said that as more facts came out, his position evolved. You don’t reach a verdict without having the facts.

Baier asked Trump who the best people are for national security: Richard Haas, Colonel Jacobs, General Kane.

Kasich reminded us that he knew Ronald Reagan.

Kelly asked Trump about his reversal on several issues, from Afghanistan to migrants from Syria and North Africa, to whether President George W. Bush lied about WMD.

Trump said that on Afghanistan, he meant Iraq. He was always against going to Iraq. On migrants, he reversed himself when the number cited drastically increased.

Kelly asked if Trump had a core. Trump said he had a strong core but that you have to have a strong degree of flexibility. You have to be flexible because you learn.

Kasich said people want politicians to tell people the truth, not what they want to hear.

Rubio said there is a difference between flexibility and telling people what they want to hear to manipulate them. Rubio cited Trump University. Trump cited a 98% approval rating and A from BBB, which Rubio said was false. Trump said he would win in court.

Rubio insisted the BBB gave Trump University a D—. Trump said it was upgraded to an A. Megyn Kelly said the D— was correct. Trump was sued, and his countersuit was thrown out.

Rubio said he spoke with one of Trump’s victims. They said it was a scam.

Trump said let’s wait a few years and he will be proven right.

Rubio said Trump is trying to do to the American voter what he did to the people who invested in Trump University.

Trump said the real con artist is Marco Rubio, and that the people of Florida can’t stand him and would not elect him dog catcher.

Trump cited a failed Mexico land deal involving Trump’s name on a building.

Cruz stepped in and played the adult. If Trump is nominated, he will face a fraud trial and be forced to answer why he supported Hillary.

Trump cited polls.

Cruz mentioned that the CNN polls Trump cites has Trump loses to Hillary by 8 while Cruz beats Hillary.

Kasich completely shifted the conversation to a woman he met whose 15 year old son took his own life. People are hurting. People are hungry for someone who can fix and solve problems. They want to believe they have the power to fix things where they live. Bring America back at the leadership level and in the neighborhoods.

Baier asked the candidates how to fix Flint, Michigan.

Rubio called it a systemic breakdown at every level of government but the politicizing of it was wrong. He praised Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. Nobody wanted kids poisoned.

Kelly asked Kasich about urban blight in Detroit. Should Detroit be bailed out. Kasich spoke passionately about how to fix schools, citing the Cleveland School District. We need vouchers and charter schools. It has to be dealt with in neighborhoods. Politics must be put aside.

Wallace asked Cruz how to bring manufacturing back to Detroit. Cruz hit a home run out of the ballpark by pointing out that 60 years of left-wing policies destroyed Detroit. He called out the media for not reporting the destruction caused by left-wing policies. Cruz said you lift regulations, repeal Obamacare, pull back regulators like EPA, and get rid of excess taxes and replace it with a 16% business flat tax.

The conversation then turned to social issues.

Baier asked if gay marriage dissenters have rights. Kasich said we must practice humility and love thy neighbor. Respect, more tolerance, stop going to court, have common sense. Do not pressure people to do thing that violate their religious beliefs.

Baier asked Cruz if a gay couple could adopt children. Cruz cited the 10th Amendment and said he would leave gay marriage and gay adoption to the states. Cruz said we can compromise on corporate tax rates but he will never compromise away religious liberty. He defended the 10 Commandments and the mojave Desert Veteran’s Memorial before the SCOTUS and won.

Trump said he agreed with Cruz and would have left the marriage issue to the states.

Baier brought up Scalia and asked if the 2nd Amendment could have limits.

Rubio said he would impose as few limits as possible. It is not a suggestion. It is an issue of freedom. No life, liberty or pursuit of happiness if you’re unsafe. Criminals do not obey laws. Gun laws are not effective.

Baier brought up Trump’s past support for an assault weapons ban. Trump said he was a strong 2nd Amendment supporter. He said he no longer supports the assault weapons ban but did not say why he changed his position.

Cruz attacked the assault weapons ban. He said Trump has promised to compromise on judges with Harry Reid and Chuck Schemer, which will eviscerate religious liberty and the Second Amendment. Cruz will appoint principled conservatives to the court.

Trump called Cruz the primary supporter of Chief Justice John Roberts.

Cruz said Donald has a tenuous relationship with the truth.

Trump kept trying to interrupt and Cruz told him to breathe.

Rubio: When they’re done doing yoga on the stage, can I get a question?

Cruz: We’re not doing yoga.

Rubio: Well Trump is very flexible.

The debate shifted to foreign policy.

Wallace asked Rubio why he thinks Trump is unfit to be CIC. Rubio said that the idea that Trump will just tell his generals to do something is not true. In an unstable world, we don’t need someone without the intellectual curiosity for the world.

Trump said Rubio is not a leader, and the generals will do as he tells them.

Rubio pointed out that Trump answers policy questions with insults. North Korea, China and Russia are serious issues. Rubio said Trump praised Putin. Trump said that was wrong.

Rubio turned to Trump: “You have yet to answer a single serious question about any of this.”

Trump said we should get along with Russia.

Cruz was asked what to do about North Korea. He offered specifics such as space based missile defense.

Kasich was asked if Trump was naive on Russia. Kasich said, “I’m not biting.” Kasich warned Putin that any attack on NATO is an attack on the US. he also brought up China, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. He showed calm and steadiness in his answer.

Wallace asked the candidates if they would support the nominee no matter what.

Rubio said yes. Hillary and Bernie were not the answer.

Cruz said yes because he gave his word.

Kasich said yes but insisted he would be the nominee, even though Trump sometimes makes it a little bit hard.

Trump joked “even if it’s not me?” He even gave Cruz and Rubio credit but said they didn’t deserve it. He finally said yes he would support the nominee.

CLOSING STATEMENTS:

Kasich: Reiterated his record and said he would apply that to Washington.

Rubio: We have the power to have another American century.

Cruz: He told military personnel and their loved ones and police officers and first responders that a President Cruz will have their back.

Trump: He will bring jobs back, strengthen the military and our borders.

John Kasich — America is amazing.

Marco Rubio — Appeal to hopes, do not prey on people’s fears.

Ted Cruz — Welcome to Texas. Democrats admit he is doing what he said he would do.

Donald Trump — We don’t win anymore. With me we will.

Wolf Blitzer asked about deporting all 12 million illegals.

Trump — Cruz the leader on amnesty. I’m the only reason we are talking about illegal immigration. Either we have a country or we don’t.

Cruz — Illegal immigration drives wages down. Arizona improving by deporting illegals and seeing wages rise.

Trump — Sheriff Joe endorsed me.

Rubio — Secure border first. Visa overstays 45% of problem. e-verify. In 2011 Trump wanted pathway to citizenship. Trump hires foreign workers, not Americans.

Trump — I hire foreign workers during peak season. Those are part time jobs. Romney should have won. He was a failed candidate.

Rubio — You hired illegals.

Trump — I’ve hired people. You’ve hired nobody.

Cruz — Donald did not discover illegal immigration. I led the fight as a Texas Senator. Trump was firing Dennis Rodman on Celebrity Apprentice. Rubio was part of Gang of 8. Donald funded it. Rubio right about 1 million judgment against Donald.

Trump — I get along with everybody. You Cruz get along with nobody. Not one GOP Senator backs you.

Cruz — Donald is a dealmaker. Anyone who cared about illegal immigration wouldn’t hire illegal immigrants or donate to Pelosi or Reid. If you want to be liked in Washington that is not a good attribute for a president.

Trump — Cruz borrowed from Goldman Sachs.

Kasich — Praised Bush 41. Complete border. I favor a guest worker program. Path to legalization.

Carson — I believe in liberty and justice for all. Not just Mexicans. Terrorists also cross border. 6 months to register as a guest worker. Don’t have to live underground anymore. Foreign aid is one solution so they do not feel the need to come here. Makes more sense than borrowing money from China.

Trump — Asked how he will make Mexico pay for the wall, he said that it just got 10 feet taller. He criticized Vicente Fox for using f-word. Trump veered to 58 billion trade deficit with Mexico. I don’t mind trade wars when we’re losing 58 billion per year.

Rubio — Trump Towers was built with illegal immigrant labor. Trump neckties made in Mexico.

Trump — You don’t know a thing about business.

Rubio — I don’t know anything about bankrupting 4 companies or being sued for fraud over Trump University. Trump inherited 200 million dollars. Otherwise he would be selling watches in Manhattan.

MARIA CELESTE ARRARAS

Rubio — Asked about DACA, Rubio said it was not about deportation. It was about an illegal unconstitutional executive order.

Cruz — Rubio says he will end it someday, but not now. It should end now. Same with Ethanol.

Rubio — Ethanol will be phased out in 2022. DACA will end on my first day as president. It cannot supersede the Constitution.

Cruz — Media thinks you can only be Hispanic if you are liberal. I got 40% of Hispanic vote in Texas when Romney only got 27%. Faith, Family, Patriotism. Highest rate of military enlistment. The Obama-Clinton community has done enormous damage to the Hispanic community.

Rubio — We are the party of diversity, not the Democratic Party. The Hispanic community cares about more than immigration. Leaving a better world for your children can only come through free enterprise.

Kasich — He refused to bash his GOP opponents. We need economic growth. Common sense regulations, lower taxes, fiscal plan that balances budget.

Carson — Make a better life for everybody.

Trump — Told of a Telemundo poll that says 75% of Hispanics don’t like him, Trump said that he does not believe a single thing Telemundo says. He has hired thousands of Hispanics. GOP getting record setting numbers. I think I have something to do with that. Democrats getting lower numbers. When told of a Washington Post poll saying 80% don’t like him, Trump dismissed it. He settled his lawsuit with Univision. He is building a much bigger, much stronger GOP.

SUPREME COURT, RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Hugh Hewitt

Cruz – Asked if he trusted Trump to appoint conservative justices, Cruz did not answer the question. He cited that some Republicans have nominated liberal judges. Cruz said every judge he nominates will vigorously defend the Bill of Rights.

Trump — Asked if Religious Liberty would be a litmus test for judges, he said yes. He called Chief Justice John Roberts a disaster.

Cruz — I supported the nominee, but I would have nominated Mike Lutig. Trump gave to far left liberal Democrats who support judicial activists.

Trump — We have to have somebody who is going to make deals. Cruz has been attacking my sister. Sam Alito signed the same bill as my sister.

Cruz — “I will not apologize for a minute for defending the Constitution. I will not apologize for defending the Bill of Rights.”

Trump called Cruz a crazy zealot.

Rubio — We’re always looking for the converts for the conservative movement. Yet Trump has no record. Rubio cited Planned Parenthood and Israel’s conflict with the Palestinians.

Trump again defended Planned Parenthood.

Kasich — Religious institutions should be free to practice the religion they believe in. On gay marriage, the court has ruled. I’ve moved on. “If you’re in the business of commerce, conduct commerce.”

Carson — Look at a what a person’s life has been. A person’s associations will tell you more than an interview. The fruit salad of their life.

OBAMACARE

Dana Bash:

Rubio — Trump likes the individual mandate. Obamacare is a job-killing law.

Trump — I support leaving in place the preexisting condition law. Those saying we need a mandate to cover preexisting conditions are wrong. We should have gotten rid of state lines.

Rubio — We led the effort to end the bailout fund for the insurance companies. Donald, what is your plan? You have no plan. Now Trump is repeating himself. Thunderous applause.

Trump kept saying there would be competition. There would be many plans. Asked if he had anything else to add, Trump said “No. What else is there to add?” The crowd booed.

Kasich would not leave the mandate in place but would allow the preexisting conditions rule to stay in place. “It’s easier to interpret the dead sea scrolls then it is to understand your hospital bill.” Kasich cited what he did in Ohio.

Carson — Healthcare is not a right but is a responsibility for a responsible society. Health Empowerment Accounts. Like Health Savings Accounts, but without bureaucrats. Medicaid will take care of the indigent.

Cruz — I would have DoJ prosecute Planned Parenthood. I want to kill ACA because it goes too far. Donald says it does not go far enough. Donald supports socialized healthcare. That will kill more jobs than Obamacare. Donald’s approach leads to rationing.

Trump — I do not want socialized medicine. Obamacare has to be repealed. It doesn’t work.

Cruz pounced and said that Donald in the past has said he did.

ECONOMY

Trump — Asked how he would cut 10 trillion, Trump cited building a dynamic economy. Asked what he would cut, Trump cited Department of Education, Common Core, EPA. Wolf Blitzer noted that those cuts are a drop in the bucket. Trump cited waste, fraud and abuse, the typical buzzwords. We will cut so much your head will spin.

Kasich — Given a chance to show Trump’s numbers do not add up, Kasich would not take the bait. Kasich reverted to bean-counter language and reiterated what he did in DC and Ohio.

Trump — Kasich struck oil.

Kasich — Only 15,000 of 450,000 jobs created came from energy. We have financial services and IT. Jobs, jobs and jobs, period.

Trump was asked about Romney’s criticisms regarding his tax returns. Trump pointed out that what really matters are statements. You don’t learn anything from tax returns. Trump said Harry Reid beautifully baited Romney. Trump has been audited every year for the last 12 years. He needs to wait until his most recent audit is finished.

Trump attacked Hugh Hewitt “Very few people listen to your radio show.”

Rubio vowed to release his tax returns in the next couple days. You cannot balance the budget without reforming entitlements, which take up 83% of the budget. The longer we wait, the closer we will be to a debt crisis.

Cruz is releasing 2 more years of tax returns tomorrow. Donald being audited underscores the need to release tax returns. 65% of Republicans think Donald is not the right candidate to beat Hillary. Hillary is corrupt. Donald can’t prosecute the case against Hillary.

Trump cited polls showing him crushing Cruz, and that he crushed Cruz in South Carolina and Nevada. I haven’t even gotten started on Hillary. She called me sexist, and then she and Bill had a rough weekend.

Cruz — Trump cites polls but not substance. Cruz brought up Trump University and the fraud trial. Donald agrees with Hillary on many issues.

Trump insisted that he was being audited because his company is large.

ISRAEL

Trump — He was asked very specifically about his promise to be a neutral arbiter. He said it makes no sense to label a good guy and a bad guy. It does no good to demean the neighbors.

Cruz — Donald and Hillary want to be neutral. “America will stand unequivocally with Israel” if Cruz is nominee. There is no moral equivalence. I have defended Israel. In 70 years Donald never has.

Trump cited his awards received from Israel.

Kasich said he stands with Israel and our allies no longer trust.

Rubio — “The position you have taken is an anti-Israel position.” You cannot have an honest dialogue when one side, the Palestinians, is dishonest. Israel is the only pro-American free enterprise democracy in the Middle East. The Palestinians are not a real estate deal. Negotiating is not possible with terrorists.

NORTH KOREA

Kasich favors regime change but did not elaborate. We should be intercepted their ships and aircraft and implement tougher sanctions. We should arm South Korea with ballistic missile technology. work with China.

Trump attacked the current budget, veering away from North Korea.

Kasich returned the conversation to North Korea.

Carson complained about not getting time to talk about taxes and Israel. Carson never had an audit until he criticized Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast. The IRS is not honest and we need to get rid of them. When he went to Israel, everyone he met said Israelis felt they were abandoned by the United States. On North Korea, Kim Jong Un is an unstable person but he respects strength.

RUSSIA

Trump rejected the newest ceasefire, saying it was meaningless.

Cruz — Russia stronger because of Obama’s weakness. Trump and Rubio backed Obama-Hillary policy of overthrowing Khadafi in Libya. Cruz called John Kerry “The most anti-Israel secretary of State this country has ever seen.” Trump donated to Kerry.

Trump said he never discussed Libya. We would be so much better off if Saddam Hussein and Khadafi were in charge. At least they killed terrorists.

Rubio — The Libyan people toppled Khadafi. If America walks away, Japan and South Korea will become nuclear powers.

Cruz vowed to post a video showing Trump in favor of toppling Khadafi. On Israel, Donald has supported anti-Israel politicians for four decades.

Trump — Nobody on this stage has done more for Israel than I have. When Cruz asked for a single example, Trump insulted Rubio and Cruz without providing one.

Carson begged “Can somebody attack me please?” The crowd went wild.

Kasich criticized Obama for not taking Syria’s Assad out. Kasich disagreed with Rubio over Libya, saying Samantha Power and Hillary Clinton undermined Khadafi.

Cruz pointed out that Harry Reid said Trump is malleable while Cruz is not.

Trump repeated the accusations that Cruz sabotaged Carson in Iowa. Trump called Cruz a basket case.

APPLE

Rubio sided with the FBI over Apple. He would absolutely force Apple to comply with a court order. “Their brand is not superior to the national security of the United States of America.”

Cruz said Apple should be forced to comply. No Fourth Amendment violation. Apple does not have a right to defend a valid court order in a terror investigation.

Carson — Allowing terrorists to get away with things is bad for America. I would expect Apple to comply. If they don’t comply you’re encouraging chaos.

Kasich — Where’s the president been? He should sit down with the parties rather than letting it play out through the media. You lock the door and say you’re not coming out until you reach an agreement.

Trump was asked why he would build a wall along Mexico but not Canada. He said Canada is a much bigger border but there are far fewer problems. He cited drugs from Mexico.

Rubio — He is against bankruptcy protection for puerto Rico because they will not take steps to fix their economy. They are not growing. They have not made budget cuts.

CLOSINGS

Carson — He cited “These hands” that have saved lives and ask America to join hand with him.

Kasich — Cited a poll showing him beating Hillary by 11 points. Reiterated his record.

Rubio — This is about the identity of our party and the conservative movement. End the silliness and looniness.

Cruz — On Day 1, I will rescind every illegal government action. I will prosecute Planned Parenthood and rip to shreds the Iran deal. I will move embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Trump — Nobody knows politicians better than I do. I will get things done. Politicians never will.
