NFL 2013 Week 10 Recap
Washington Redskins at Minnesota Vikings was the Thursday night game. Washington moved down the field but not past the 3 yard line as a 20 yard Kai Forbath field goal got the Redskins on the board first. An 18 yard touchdown run by Adrian Peterson put the Vikings up 7-3, but Robert Griffin III threw an 8 yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon to make it 10-7 Redskins.
In the second quarter Christian Ponder threw a 2 yard touchdown to Cordarelle Patterson to make it 14-10 Vikings. Yet RGIII kept coming back. He led a 13 play, 80 yard, 8 minute drive that culminated in an 11 yard touchdown to Jordan Reed for a 17-14 Redskins lead. Washington got the ball back and RGIII quickly moved them 77 yards in 11 plays. A one yard touchdown pass to Logan Paulsen with only 15 seconds left in the half made it 24-14 Redskins.
The Redskins extended the lead in the third quarter with a 40 yard field goal by Forbath. Yet the Vikings kept it close as Ponder hit John Carlson for a 28 yard touchdown to get Minnesota within 27-21.
A short field due to a penalty on a punt had the Vikings starting at the Washington 41. On 3rd and 12 Ponder went deep to Wright for a 28 yard gain. Ponder then scrambled toward the goal line. An initial touchdown was reversed and ruled down at the one. Yet Ponder was injured on the play and did not return. Peterson got the touchdown as the Vikings were now back in front 28-27.
Matt Cassel replaced Ponder and played the fourth quarter. Another short punt by Washington had Minnesota starting at midfield. Walsh kicked a 39 yard field goal to put the Vikings up 31-27 with 10 minutes left in regulation. Washington went 3 and out and the Vikings ground down the clock. Walsh added a 40 yard field goal to put the Vikings up by 7 with 3 1/2 minutes to play.
RGIII led Washington one final time after a touchback all the way to the Minnesota 4 yard line with 38 seconds left in regulation. Facing 2nd and goal, RGIII threw incomplete 3 straight times as the inspired goal line stand dropped Washington to 3-6 and gave Minnesota their 2nd win of the year. 34-27 Vikings
Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta Falcons—One year after Atlanta knocked Seattle out of the playoffs on the final play, Seattle returned to the Georgia Dome for revenge against a Falcons team in deep trouble. Steve Hauschka hit a 39 yard field goal to make it 3-0 Seahawks. In the second quarter Hauschka added a 43 yarded to make it 6-0 Seattle. Matt Bryant nailed a 53 yarded to get the Falcons on the board.
This time Seattle came right back with a flea flicker as a 43 yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to Kearse made it 13-3 Seahawks. Hauschka added his third field goal from 44 yards to make it 16-3. Seattle got it back and 60 yards came easily as Wilson hit Golden Tate for a 7 yard score as a close game was now a 23-3 Seattle romp at the half.
Seattle ground down the clock in the third quarter as a 12 play, 53 yard, 7 minute drive led to Hauschka’s fourth field goal from 53 yards out to put Seattle up 26-3. Matt Ryan would throw a 12 yard touchdown pass, but in the fourth quarter Wilson led an 80 yard drive. Marshawn Lynch took it in from the one as Seattle romped to a 9-1 record while Atlanta saw their season end just past the midpoint. 33-10 Seahawks
Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens—Marvin Lewis gambled early with the Bengals facing 4th and 1 at the Baltimore 47. Andy Dalton tried the quarterback sneak and got stopped by Terrell Suggs. Joe Flacco went deep on the first play and drew a defensive pass interference penalty at the 5 yard line. On 3rd and goal from the one, Flacco hit Dallas Clark for the touchdown to make it 7-0 Ravens. Baltimore got it back and Justin Tucker hit a 36 yard field goal to make it 10-0 Ravens.
Midway through the second quarter an interception of Dalton set the Ravens up at the Cincy 11. Flacco hit Torry Smith for the 7 yard score to make it 17-0 Bengals. In the third quarter the Bengals finally cracked the scoreboard as a 32 yard Mike Nugent field goal had them down 17-3.
Dalton led the Bengals back in the fourth quarter as a 71 yard drive resulted in an 18 yard touchdown pass to Greg Bernard with 8 1/2 minutes left in regulation. With 4 minutes left the Ravens faced 3rd and 10 at the Cincy 42. Flacco was sacked and fumbled. Yet from the Baltimore 37, Dalton was intercepted at the 2 minute warning.
Cincinnati had all of their timeouts, and they used them on defense and held. The offense got one more chance after poor punt coverage with the ball at their own 40 with 90 seconds left. With 2 seconds to play, The Bengals faced 4th and 15 just shy of midfield. It was time for the Hail Mary. Dalton heaved it, it was tipped in the air at the 5, tipped again at the goal line, and AJ Green came down with it in the end zone for a miracle touchdown in front of a shellshocked home crowd. The game was headed to overtime 17-17.
Cincinnati got the ball first in overtime after a touchback. On 4th and 2 from the Baltimore 33, Marvin Lewis decided to go for it rather than try a 51 yard field goal. A pass play was blown up in the backfield for an 11 yard loss. Baltimore moved from their 44 to the Cincy 28. With 5 1/2 minutes left in overtime, Tucker nailed the 46 yard field goal as Baltimore avoided a collapse and possibly saved their season. 20-17 Ravens, OT
Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears—Jay Cutler is back, giving Chicago a chance in this battle for first place in the NFC North. Cutler started hot right away, going deep to Brandon Marshall for a 32 yard touchdown and a 7-0 Bears lead. Matthew Stafford led the Lions back with a 12 play, 85 yard, 6 1/2 minute drive. A 5 yard touchdown to Durham tied the game 7-7.
In the third quarter, Stafford led Detroit 66 yards as a 4 yard touchdown to Megatron Calvin Johnson had the Lions up 14-7. In the third quarter Robbie Gould hit a 25 yard field goal to get the Bears within 14-10. In the fourth quarter Chicago thought they had the lead, but the go ahead touchdown pass on further review was called out of bounds. The Bears settled for a field goal to trail 14-13 with 9 minutes left in regulation.
After an exchange of punts, Detroit took over at their 26 with 5 1/2 minutes left. With 2 1/2 minutes left, facing 3rd and 10 at the Chicago 14, Stafford found Johnson for the touchdown as Detroit had a 21-13 lead. With 2:17 to play from the Chicago 26, despite playing the whole game, Cutler was not in. Josh McCown came in and led the Bears down the field. On 4th and 1 from the Detroit 42 with 1:50 left, McCown hit Marshall for 14 yards. On 3rd and 6 from the Detroit 11 with 47 seconds left, McCown hit Marshall for the touchdown. Everything came down to the 2 point conversion. Matt Forte got the carry and did not get in. The onside kick failed as the Lions moved into the NFC North lead. 21-19 Lions
Philadelphia Eagles at Green Bay Packers—Nick Foles threw a 55 yard touchdown to Desean Jackson to make it 7-0 Eagles early on. With Aaron Rodgers out, Seneca Wallace was up next. He then left the game injured. A chance to tie the game was blown when a red zone interception in the end zone went for a touchback. Both teams moved down the field in the second quarter but bogged down inside the 10 yard line. Alex Henery hit a 25 yarded for the Eagles and Mason Crosby hit the 26 yarded for the Packers as Green Bay trailed 10-3 at intermission.
In the third quarter Foles went deep to Riley Cooper for a 45 yard touchdown to make it 17-3 Eagles. Third string quarterback Scott Tolzien was intercepted to set up a 41 yard Henery field goal to make it 20-3 Eagles. Tolzien moved the Packers 86 yards and threw a 22 yard touchdown to Bostick, but Foles came back with his third touchdown pass, a 32 yarded to Cooper to make it 27-10 Eagles.
Green Bay had a chance to get back in with a field goal with 12 1/2 minutes left and a sack of Foles that forced a fumble recovered by the Packers at the Philly 13. Yet on 4th and 4 from the 7, Tolzien threw incomplete. Foles then led a 16 play drive that bled the final 9 1/2 minutes off of the clock as Green Bay never saw the ball again. One week after throwing for seven touchdowns, Foles threw three more as the Packers prayed for any quarterback. 27-13 Eagles
St. Louis Rams at Indianapolis Colts—Chris Long returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown as the Rams took a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter the Rams faced 3rd and 3 at the Indy 36. A short pass from Kellen Clemens to Chris Givens went down to the one, and Stacy banged it in to make it 14-0 Rams. After scoring on defense and offense, special teams came next as a 98 yard punt return for a touchdown by Tavon Austin to make it 21-0 Rams in front of a shocked home crowd. The Rams got it back and Clemens went deep to Austin for a 57 yard touchdown as the Rams were clobbering the Colts 28-0 as the crowd sat in disbelief.
By the third quarter the home crowd was catatonic as Clemens connected with Austin on an 81 yard touchdown to make it 35-0 Rams. The Rams added a field goal because they could. The Colts finally got a garbage touchdown but this entire game was a stunner. 38-8 Rams
Oakland Raiders at New York Giants—The New York Giants fumbled the opening kickoff right into the arms of the Raiders special teams as the Silver and Black started at the Giants 5 yard line. Terrelle Pryor snuck over the top from one yard out as the Raiders led 7-0 only 53 seconds into the game.
The Raiders got the ball back but a promising drive ended due to a penalty near midfield and a couple dropped passes. Then the special teams reversed roles as the Giants Demonterrey Taylor blocked the punt and Cooper Taylor ran it in for the tying touchdown as each team scored without any offense.
The battle of which offense wanted it least continued as a 3rd and 20 pass turned disastrous for the Giants when they fumbled the ball away. Oakland took over at the Giants 21. On 3rd and 4 Pryor threw to the end zone incomplete as the Raiders settled for a 33 yard Sebastian Janikowski field goal and a 10-7 lead.
The Giant got it back at their own 10 yard line and Eli Manning finally got going. On 3rd and 4 from the Oakland 18, Manning threw incomplete but the Raiders jumped offsides. On 3rd and 3 from the 6, Manning lobbed a fade to the end zone for the score to put the Giants up 14-10.
On the next Oakland series an intentional grounding penalty on Pryor meant a loss of 20 yards. A run on 3rd and 30 that gained 22 yards to long field goal range was nullified by holding. A few weeks after the Raiders failed to convert 3rd and 48, they failed to convert 3rd and 40. A good punt pinned the Giants back to their own 3 yard line. Tracy Porter did in the Super Bowl 4 years ago against Peyton Manning, and in this game he did it to baby brother Eli. A 43 yard interception return for a touchdown had the Raiders up 17-14 with 90 seconds left in the half.
In the third quarter Pryor moved the Raiders after a touchback. A couple of Houdini acts on third down had the Raiders facing 2nd and goal at the one. Yet with the running game working perfectly, a play action pass was incomplete and a false start meant after 14 plays, 8 minutes and 79 yards, the Raiders again failed to finish a drive. Seabass hit the 24 yarded to make it 20-14 Raiders.
The Giants went 3 and out and a shanked punt had the Raiders with a short field at the Giants 48. Yet the Raiders do not finish drives and they do not finish games. The defense keeps them in it, and the offense gives it away. On 3rd and 9 in field goal range, Pryor threw an interception and chaos ensued. Thomas returned it 65 yards to the Oakland 5 yard line, was stripped of the ball, and saw it go out the back of the end zone for a touchback. Yet Thomas was ruled down at the 5 yard line. One moment the Raiders have a chance to go up by 2 scores, and the next moment they are losing. Antonio Brown ran it in from the one to put the Giants up 21-20 late in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter Manning led the Giants 13 plays, 70 yards in 7 minutes, but from the 2 yard line Brown was blasted for a 3 yard loss. Josh brown kicked the 23 yard field goal to make it 24-20 Giants as neither offense could put the game away. After Pryor nearly threw another interception, the Raiders went 3 and out and a punt gave Big Blue a short field with 8 minutes to play.
The Giants failed to capitalize and the punt was partially blocked as the Raiders had good field position at their 35 with 5 minutes left. Rather then stretch the chains, the Raiders insisted on West Coast Offense dink and dunk passes. After a near interception, Pryor on 3rd and 10 was hit and fumbled. The Giants again had a short field at the Oakland 45 with 3 1/2 minutes left.
Desperately needing a stop, the Raiders did not get one as the Giants ran out the clock. Both teams are 3-6, but after an 0-5 start the Giants under Tom Coughlin have showed heart. The Raiders under Dennis Allen have none, and Jon Gruden should return to the Black Hole next year. 24-20 Giants
Buffalo Bills at Pittsburgh Steelers—EJ Manuel returned for the Bills, but early on it was a 57 yard interception return by Byrd that led to a 20 yard Buffalo field goal and a 3-0 Bills lead. A 36 yarded by Shawn Suisham tied the game in the second quarter. Ben Roethlisberger moved the Steelers 86 yards late in the half as a 5 yard touchdown to Jerricho Cotchery had Pittsburgh up 10-3.
In the third quarter Le’Veon Bell ran it in from 4 yards out and Suisham added a pair of fourth quarter field goals to put the game out of reach. Buffalo got a garbage touchdown but Pittsburgh got the ugly but efficient win. 23-10 Steelers
Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans—Chris Johnson fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and the Jaguars took over at the Houston 15. Maurice Jones-Drew ran it in from 6 yards out to make it 7-0 Jaguars. Jacksonville got it back and Josh Scobee hit a 50 yard field goal as the Jaguars took a surprising 10-0 lead over a stunned home crowd.
The second quarter began with Jake Locker throwing an interception to give the Jaguars a short field. Scobee hit from 44 to make it 13-0 Jacksonville. Chad Henne was intercepted, and the Titans faced 2nd and 2 at the Jacksonville 16. Locker then fumbled and was benched. The Titans got it back at their own 48 and Ryan Fitzpatrick came in for Locker. On 3rd and 1 from the Jaguars 9, Fitzpatrick hit Thompson for the score with 46 seconds left in the half. Despite being totally outplayed the Titans were within 13-7 of the winless Jaguars.
In the third quarter Henne moved the Jaguars 79 yards as a 5 yard run by Todman had the Jaguars up 20-7. Rob Bironas hit a 39 yard field goal to get the Titans within 20-10. Winless Jacksonville tried to give the game away but Tennessee was reluctant to take it. On 1st and 14 from their own 4, Henne was intercepted. Tennessee took over at the Jacksonville 26 but on 3rd and 3 Fitzpatrick threw incomplete. Bironas hit from 37 to get the Titans within 20-13 with 13 minutes left in regulation.
With 8 minutes left Jacksonville punted, pinning the Titans back at their own one. On the next play holding in the end zone on Tennessee meant a safety, a 9 point Jacksonville lead, and a free kick to the Jaguars. Jacksonville went 3 and out and the Titans got it back at their own 28 with 6 minutes to play. Fitzpatrick led the Titans 72 yards and ran for the 4 yard touchdown to get the Titans within 22-20 with 4:20 to play.
Jacksonville again went 3 and out and the Titans quickly faced 3rd and 9 from their 30 with 2:40 to play. Fitzpatrick was sacked and fumbled. Will Blackmon returned it 21 yards for a touchdown as the Jaguars led 29-20 with 2 1/2 minutes to play.
Tennessee got the ball at their 18 and Fitzpatrick rapidly moved the Titans 82 yards. On 3rd and 5 from the Jacksonville 14, Fitzpatrick hit Walker for the touchdown to get the Titans within 2 points. Only 44 seconds remained.
The onside kick failed as Tennessee lost at home in a shocker. The Losing has stopped. The jokes have stopped. The Jaguars are not the 1976 Buccaneers, 2008 Lions, or even the 2013 Buccaneers. With one win, they are now no longer the worst NFL team in Florida. Any Given Sunday lives on. As uber-announcer Chris Berman reminds us, “That’s why they play the games.” 29-27 Jaguars
Carolina Panthers at San Francisco 49ers—Carolina is improved, but they were going up against a 49ers team that had won 5 straight. Both teams have defenses, and they both showed up and ruled on this day. Three field goals by Phil Dawson from 52, 43, and 25 had the 49ers up 9-0 in the second quarter. Just before the half Denagelo Williams broke off a 27 yard touchdown run as the Panthers trailed 9-7 at halftime. The second half was a brutal slog.
With 10 minutes left in regulation Graham Gano lveled a 53 yard field goal to give Carolina the one point lead. The 49ers went nowhere on 2 possessions, and got it back at their own 20 with 1:10 to play. Kaepernick was sacked and then intercepted as the Panthers made a huge statement on the road. 10-9 Panthers
Houston Texans at Arizona Cardinals—Gary Kubiak thankfully is recuperating. His team however is not. On the first play from scrimmage Case Keenum was sacked and fumbled, and Shaugnessy returned it 6 yards for a score to make it 7-0 Cardinals. Keenum came back with a 7 yard touchdown to Andre Johnson to tie the game.
In the second quarter Palmer hit Housler for a 12 yard touchdown to make it 14-7 Cardinals. Keenum brought the Texans 80 yards as a 2 yard touchdown to Griffin tied the game 14-14. An interception of Palmer gave The Texans a short field, and a 48 yard field goal by Bullock had the Texans up 17-14 at halftime. Another field goal try by the Texans on the last play of the half was blocked.
Jay Feely hit field goals of 35 and 21 in the third quarter as the Cardinals took the 20-17 lead. Midway through the fourth quarter Palmer hit Roberts for a 19 yard touchdown to make it 27-17 Cardinals. Arizona got it back at their own 5 with 5 minutes left looking to put the game away. Rashaard Mendenhall fumbled and JJ Watt recovered for Houston. On 3rd and goal Keenum hit Johnson for the score as Houston was back within a field goal.
From their 18, Arizona again tried to put it away. On 3rd and 2 Palmer hit Ellington for 12 yards. The Texans took their final timeout with 2:16 to play and the Cardinals facing 3rd and 7 at their 41. Rather than run and take at least 40 seconds on the clock, Bruce Arians called a pass play. It was complete, but one yard short of the marker. Even worse the receiver went out of bounds to stop the clock with 2:11 left. Bruce Arians challenged the spot but lost.
Houston had one final shot from their own 16 with 2:06 to play and 0 timeouts. With 90 seconds left Houston faced 4th and 3 from their 35. Kenum threw incomplete and the Cardinals finally had the win. 27-24 Cardinals
Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers—John Fox was recovering from heart surgery while Peyton Manning continues to give opposing defenses heartburn. First Manning went to Thomas for a 74 yard touchdown. In the second quarter. Nick Novak hit field goals of 26 and 40 to get the Chargers within 7-6. Manning then went wild, hitting Thomas for touchdowns of 11 and 7 and for a 34 yard third quarter touchdown as the Broncos looked dominant 28-6.
With Denver in total control, Manning was sacked deep in his own territory and fumbled. San Diego recovered at the Denver 11. Philip Rivers threw a 7 yard touchdown to Danny Woodhead to get the Chargers within 28-13. San Diego began the fourth quarter at their own 40 and Rivers moved them quickly. With 11 minutes left in regulation, Ryan Mathews scored from one yard out as the Chargers were within 8 points.
With 3 1/2 minutes left Denver fumbled a punt but retained possession at their own 19. Manning found Thomas for gains of 12 and 9, both for first downs as the Chargers never got the ball back. Manning briefly had his ankle rolled on, but he was ok. The players decided not to tell Coach Fox for fear of giving him more heart problems. 28-20 Broncos
Dallas Cowboys at New Orleans Saints is the Sunday night game. Darren Sproles fumbled a punt, giving Dallas the ball at the Saints 18. Dallas settled for a 37 yard Dan Bailey field goal to lead 3-0. Brees moved the Saints 80 yards as a 22 yard touchdown to Marques Colston gave the Saints the lead.
In the second quarter a 7 yard touchdown run by DeMarco Murray had Dallas back in front. Yet Brees then led another 80 yard drive that consumed 14 plays and 9 minutes of clock. Brees hit Pierre Thomas for the one yard touchdown to make it 14-10 Saints. Dallas punted and the Saints got it back at their own 48. Brees made it look easy and on 3rd and goal from the 3 Sproles got in to make it 21-10 Saints with 90 seconds left in the half.
Dallas went 3 and out and used up only 30 seconds as the Saints got it back at their 25 with 53 seconds left and all 3 timeouts. Brees killed the Cowboys. With 25 seconds left in the half from the Dallas 47, Brees hit Colston for 19 and Sproles for a 28 yard touchdown with 5 seconds left in the half as the Superdome was rocking with the Saints up 28-10.
At this point the Saints had outgunned the Cowboys 320 to 100. Brees was a lights out 26 of 30 including 19 straight completions for 252 yards and 3 touchdowns. The pass happy Cowboys ran the ball only 9 times last week with 54 passes. This week it was virtually all runs as Romo threw only 9 passes, completing 3 for 20 yards.
The Saints continued the offensive onslaught in the second half, slowed only by a missed field goal. Brees needed only 6 plays to move the Saints 92 yards as Mark Ingram ran it in from 4 yards out to make it 35-10. Romo quickly brought the Cowboys 89 yards as a 26 yard touchdown to Terrence Williams got the Cowboys within 35-17 after three quarters. A surprise onside kick was successful for Dallas but led to nothing.
In the fourth quarter Brees went bombs away to Kenny Stills for a 52 yard touchdown and Thomas crashed in from one yard out. The Saints set an NFL record with 40 first downs and racked up 626 yards of offense. Brees finished 34 of 41 for 392 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions. 49-17 Saints
